What to Expect at Your First Massage

· By Leana · 2 min read

If you’ve never had a professional massage before, it’s completely normal to feel a little unsure about what to expect. Will it hurt? What do I wear? What if I fall asleep? (Spoiler: falling asleep is a good thing.)

Here’s a simple guide to help you feel prepared and relaxed before your first session.

Before Your Appointment

  • Hydrate — drink plenty of water in the hours before your session.
  • Eat lightly — avoid a heavy meal right before. A light snack is fine.
  • Arrive a few minutes early — this gives you time to settle in and fill out a brief health consultation form.
  • Wear comfortable clothing — you’ll be asked to undress to your comfort level and will be covered with towels throughout the session. Only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time.

During the Session

When you arrive, we’ll have a short chat about:

  • Any areas of pain or tension
  • Your general health and any conditions I should know about
  • What you’d like from the session (relaxation, targeted work, etc.)
  • Your pressure preference

Once we begin, you don’t need to do anything except relax. I’ll check in with you on pressure — please always feel free to ask for more or less. There’s no “right” way to receive a massage. Some people chat, some go quiet, some fall asleep. All are perfectly fine.

After the Session

  • Drink water — this helps your body process the treatment.
  • Take it easy — avoid intense exercise for the rest of the day if possible.
  • You may feel a bit tender — especially if we did deeper work. This is normal and usually fades within 24-48 hours.
  • Notice how you feel — many people report better sleep, reduced tension, and improved mood in the days following a massage.

How Often Should I Book?

That depends on your goals:

  • For general well-being and stress management: once a month is a great maintenance routine.
  • For chronic pain or specific issues: an initial course of weekly or fortnightly sessions is often most effective, then moving to monthly maintenance.
  • For sports recovery: before and after events, or as part of your regular training cycle.

If you have any questions before your first session, don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’m always happy to chat and help you feel comfortable.
